Create Custom Ringtones For the Iphone

This is the steps needed to be done in order to create custom ringtones for your Iphone. I used it for my Iphone 3G and it worked.

1. Select the song you want to use as the ringtone for your iphone.

2. Right click on it, and select "Create AAC Version". A copy version of the song will be created.

3. Once created, right click on the new copy, and select "Get Info".

4. Select the Options Tab. Under the option, go down to the "Start Time" and "Stop Time" checkboxes. Check both boxes and put in the time you want your ringtone to start/stop. (REMEMBER: Iphone only allows for 30 SECONDS of ringtone time.)

5. Click OK. Right click the edited copy and select "Create AAC Version". This will create a new song file with the start and stop times that has been specified.

6. Drag the newly created file to your desktop.

7. IMPORTANT: delete the original song and the AAC version in Itunes.

8. The song file on your desktop is a .m4a file. We will need to change it from the YOURFILENAME.m4a to YOURFILENAME.m4r

9. To change the file type (if your song does not show it) go to -
Control panel > Appearance and themes > folder options > view > uncheck hide extensions for known types. This will allow the file type to be viewed and to be change. There ought to be a warning that will pop up if it is done correctly. Proceed to click yes/use .m4r.

10. Once changed, dragged the file back into Itunes, and it ought to be under the ringtones sections.

11. Sync your Iphone with your computer and you are done!!

Another quick note - The song file must not be copy protected or it will not work.

Hope this helps anyone who is trying to create custom ringtones.
